I go with my buzzcut/non-period haircut and don't worry about the issue. 41 9.17%
I grow my hair out as long as I can before an event. 61 13.65%

I cut my own hair, what I have left at least. For those required by service or occupation you may consider doing this. Using electric clippers with a 1/2 inch gage or less you can buzz it off yourself in a huury. With sizzors you can trim up over the ears and neck for work requirements. Skipping a cut a week or two before an event will certainly give you a soldier look of the time.

As far as using period photos as solid reference shouldn't we consider human vanity, in that someone would want to look their best to have their likeness captured so wouldn't poular fashion dictate(QM)... sorry my question mark key is broken...

"Popular fashion" of the time would be found in those pictures. Human vanity is relative to the time period as well and today's standards cannot be applied to that of the 1860s.
