    Re: Shoe repair service

I was very pleasantly suprised to find a long time cobbler way out here in Idaho who does authentic repairs, sewn or pegged soles. The only thing he won't do is hobnails, as it would further damage his beat up hands and wrists...but he let me use his period last and hammer to pound in my own period hobnails.

It is another trade that is fading away, unfortunately.

      Re: Shoe repair service

I would certainly use a period shoe repair person if I could find one. I had an old gentlemen locally who was great at repairing brogans but he passed away last year. There is always the option of sending them to the original vendor you purchased from of course. But, if you had someone at an event that was set up to do correct repairs on period boots and shoes.. well.. that would be just Bully!

There is definitely a need. Jody Sarno in Chambersburg was always a go-to-guy for repairs. But, alas, his business is no more.

John, If there would be an authentic cobbler I am for it. If it were a matter of shipping the footwear TO the cobbler I would do it. Dennis W. Duerbeck

            Re: Shoe repair service

There's a Russian guy in Anaheim, California who does old time shoe repair. I know, I know, Anaheim of all places...the land of Mickey Mouse, the Angels constant sunshine and wildfires! I took ALL my shoes to him and he even offered to make me a pair. He still has all the old tools, techniques, etc. in his place. Believe it or not, he made his own pegs or knew where to get them. Regardless, I took a pair of MBS shoes to him where a bad batch of leather had caused the toes to split and crack. He made a period repair with a patch of leather over the toes and they sorta resembled a shoe with a steel toe - if you know what I mean. Later, only after I was able to send the shoes back for a new pair did I see an original pair with this EXACT same type of repair. I wish now I would've kept them they were that well done!

Anyway, I'll post a few photos of his repair work when I get a chance so you can see what I mean.

            His contact info is:

              Duh...forgot the phone number: 714.635.3104

I had him add extra (I think it's called a "clump" sole to the bottom of my "CS-6's" - both shoes) and you can see on the side views where the leather was matched to the already existing and worn down sole. This repair is close to 10 years old now and the pegs are holding just fine. He also added a few nails and copper rivets. In fact, his pegs are diamond in shape whereas the ones that the shoes were made of are more round. This may be why they've lasted as long as they have? Not sure.

              Anyway, hope this helps...

I think you meant Jody Sarno of Chambersburg Cobbler.

                  Re: Shoe repair service

To answer some of questions raised:

At this time, the shoe repair will not be done at events but rather a "mail them in, get them mailed back" operation.

The repairs will be done by a craftsman who has trained at several living history sites. He has experience in both shoe making and repair.

We are working with the craftsman in determining if there is sufficient interest in this service to make it viable. Your feedback has been very valuable, please keep it coming.

                  Thanks,
                  Beth Crabb

                    Hi John,

I've worn more than one pair of shoes until they came off my feet in pieces. If there was a source to send a pair in and have it sent back, I certainly would use it for one of my current pairs of shoes before they come off my feet in pieces.

                      Hallo!

                      Depends...

Presently, I would buy a new pair.

I would buy a new pair because of the lack of "repairers" (actual lack of and my lack of knowledge of...) who can do Period repairs such as on Period pegged or sewn shoes.

If I had a "repairer" or "cobbler" or "shoemaker" I would not buy new shoes until absolutely necessary as I tend to dislike the look of new shoes only less than the annnoyance of "breaking them in" to my feet.

A good shoe is like an old friend... comforting.

I agree with "A good shoe is like an old friend." Once they are finally fitting and feeling good, I would try to get them repaired.

At present, the only choice I am aware of would be having the maker repair them. If a quality period correct repair service was offered elsewhere, I would consider that also.

I would not even consider a modern shoemaker, as they might use non-correct methods and "ruin" my shoes with modern repairs.
