  • Announcement: Louisiana Uniform Coats: VERY Limited Offer!

    Friends,

I recently finished a very fun and interesting custom order comprised of a Louisiana uniform coat and a matching pair of trousers. The coat is based very closely upon the original black-trimmed example in the collection of artist/historian Don Troiani and is, in my opinion, a great example of an early war Louisiana-produced garment. Because this project was so much fun, I have decided to use the scant few yards of matching cloth to offer an extremely limited run of TWO Louisiana state uniform coats.

The reproduction will be cut using a proportionately graded frock coat pattern with custom drafted front panels to emulate the asymmetrical fronts of the original. Both frocks will be made from Ben Tart's "bark" on natural wool/cotton cassimere. While many of you know that the original Louisiana frock is made using an olive green and natural all-wool cassimere, the blend cassimere allows for a similarly attractive look in the finished garment without the wait of a large custom weaving project. The chest, underarm, and sleeve linings will be cut from Family Heirloom Weavers white cotton taffeta, with the chest featuring a large pocket opening into the facing and no padding. Tail pockets, accessible from the inside, will be cut from brown cotton sheeting. Black mohair tape is machine and hand-sewn to the cuffs, epaulettes, collar/front margins, center tail seam, and tail "scallops." Each coat is finished with stamped brass Louisiana state seal buttons on the front and tails, Fed. infantry officer buttons on the epaulettes and cuffs, and gimped hand-sewn buttonholes worked with black silk thread.

The cost per coat will be $450 which takes into account everything stated above plus all of the careful tacking, basting, and overcasting that a faithful reproduction demands. Because of the small amount of cassimere I have on hand for the project I can only take orders for proportionate frocks in a chest size up to 46; this means a waist size four inches smaller than your chest measure.

Please contact me here on the AC via private message for additional information. Anyone interested in ordering a frock may contact my business partner Dan Wambaugh at 517-303-3609 or dan@wwandcompany.com.

Production will start towards the end of this month after my return to Michigan and full-time work. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in a Louisiana frock made from another kind of material or if you have your own that you'd like me to use! I am also entertaining a short run of Louisiana jackets (as per the Horse Soldier example) and will post additional information on those at a later date.

    Thanks,
    Brian White

I might be interested in a Louisiana jacket if/when you do a larger run.

Here's a picture of the jacket I also want to produce although at a later time. I'm currently working on sourcing the appropriate fabrics for it and will post more once I get a prototype made up.

                  Folks,

Let's not hijack Brian's advertisement for these excellent frocks with discussion of the jacket. When and if he/we are able to do some of the jackets we'll be happy to discuss them, or perhaps even a new thread in the authenticity folder would be a great place to talk about that jacket. For now, this is an advertisement for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get a spot on reproduction of an amazing frock coat made by the finest tailor in the hobby today. Let's discuss the frock here and now, and if you're interested in the jacket feel free to take it to another appropriate folder or private message.

                  Thanks folks!

Re: Louisiana Uniform Coats: VERY Limited Offer!

                      Mr. Wiswell,

I believe this is a penitentary made garment (depot made) worn by several Louisiana units namely the Crescent Regt. If I remember right this coat is lined in the upper area and not the skirts. The units later went to shell jackets (like the one carried by Horse Soldier) when the frocks wore out, etc.

This is from Lazy Jacks research:

The nature of this new uniform was described by Orderly Sgt. W. H. Tunnard:

This clothing was manufactured in the State Penitentiary, and was of a substantial material known as jeans, being of greyish-blue color, with the exception of Company K, which was dark brown. The outfit.., infused a new feeling and spirit amongst the men.

                      (Tunnard 1997 reprint: 69)

Wait until you see the Louisiana kepi that will complete this set.

                        I'll post pics of it.

Great job on the coat Brian. I got a chance to examine this coat years ago and I think your reproduction frocks are long over due in this hobby. Thanks again to you and Dan for keeping up the great work!

Re: Louisiana Uniform Coats: VERY Limited Offer!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Chris, I know you've actually sat down and studied the original inside and out so your support means a lot!

As for the jackets, Dan is right, and I think I probably fumbled when I mentioned them in this thread. When I source the material and produce a prototype I will start a new thread and include all of the pertinent information!

Finally, when I posted the advert about the frocks I left out one big important detail in my haste. While the price will remain $450 per uniform coat due to the extensive detail work, interested parties may choose to pay half of the price ($225) upon ordering and the balance when the garment is complete. Business is picking up and this will assure your permanent spot on my work list!

I also failed to provide my personal email address; you may contact me at floatingeyeofdeath@netzero.net with any questions, requests for photos, etc., at any time and I will get back to you promptly.

Thanks again for your interest and messages regarding the Louisiana frock (and all the other varieties too! :tounge_sm).

                              Brian,

Man, that is a beautiful & accurate coat! Well done & at a very low price for the quality of work.

The detail, especially the cuff, looks great ( the cuff is the most often missed part of reproducing this particular coat), as well as how the coat is finished.

Folks ought to jump on this deal.

                              All the best
