Friends,
I recently finished a very fun and interesting custom order comprised of a Louisiana uniform coat and a matching pair of trousers. The coat is based very closely upon the original black-trimmed example in the collection of artist/historian Don Troiani and is, in my opinion, a great example of an early war Louisiana-produced garment. Because this project was so much fun, I have decided to use the scant few yards of matching cloth to offer an extremely limited run of TWO Louisiana state uniform coats.
The reproduction will be cut using a proportionately graded frock coat pattern with custom drafted front panels to emulate the asymmetrical fronts of the original. Both frocks will be made from Ben Tart's "bark" on natural wool/cotton cassimere. While many of you know that the original Louisiana frock is made using an olive green and natural all-wool cassimere, the blend cassimere allows for a similarly attractive look in the finished garment without the wait of a large custom weaving project. The chest, underarm, and sleeve linings will be cut from Family Heirloom Weavers white cotton taffeta, with the chest featuring a large pocket opening into the facing and no padding. Tail pockets, accessible from the inside, will be cut from brown cotton sheeting. Black mohair tape is machine and hand-sewn to the cuffs, epaulettes, collar/front margins, center tail seam, and tail "scallops." Each coat is finished with stamped brass Louisiana state seal buttons on the front and tails, Fed. infantry officer buttons on the epaulettes and cuffs, and gimped hand-sewn buttonholes worked with black silk thread.
The cost per coat will be $450 which takes into account everything stated above plus all of the careful tacking, basting, and overcasting that a faithful reproduction demands. Because of the small amount of cassimere I have on hand for the project I can only take orders for proportionate frocks in a chest size up to 46; this means a waist size four inches smaller than your chest measure.
Please contact me here on the AC via private message for additional information. Anyone interested in ordering a frock may contact my business partner Dan Wambaugh at 517-303-3609 or dan@wwandcompany.com.
Production will start towards the end of this month after my return to Michigan and full-time work. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in a Louisiana frock made from another kind of material or if you have your own that you'd like me to use! I am also entertaining a short run of Louisiana jackets (as per the Horse Soldier example) and will post additional information on those at a later date.
Thanks,
