  • Requesting Input: Interest in Civilian Trousers?

    Friends,

I have several yards each of black wool kersey and black on tan satinette, both woven by Pat Kline of Family Heirloom Weavers, that I am considering either using for a short run of civilian trousers or selling by the piece. Before I make my decision I want to find out if black civilian trousers would be something of interest.

Each pair will be cut using a pattern taken from an original example and not made using a CS trouser pattern. I also intend to produce these in a piecework fashion, by hand and machine, to reflect the mass produced and widely available garments of the period. Buttons and adjustment belt buckles will be original while each pair of trouser will be lined, faced, etc. with linen and/or cotton.

Right now I estimate that I would be able to produce up to four pairs of kersey and two pairs of satinette trousers. The satinette being light in weight, I may fully line them or leave them unlined which would suit hotter climates or spring/summer use.

Thank you for your thoughts and comments!

    Hallo!

I would be interested in purchasing a pair of each...

If you could modify the pattern to be more civilianish fashionable "peg legged" and tailored rather than the "voluminous" wided legged of (most) CW patterns now being used? (Especially bad for riding and for wearing under stovepipe boots...)

    Yes, no, maybe??

      Brian,

I have thought several times over the last month that I could use some black trousers. If you give the word, I'd place an order for pair made of the kersey.

        Curt,

To answer your question, yes, the legs on the civilian pattern I have are tapered and offer a different profile than the variety cut using CS trouser patterns. The cuffs are also sloped.

Goes to show what I know, I thought there would be zero interest in good civilian trousers!

Brian made me a pair several years ago and they are one of my most treasured garments. His attention to detail and overall craftsmanship are second to none. I think I might grab another pair as well!

I would go for a pair made out of the black on tan satinette. Just let me know how much they will cost.

              Hallo!

In that case, I would like to order one pair of each!

Hurrah for Haberdashery! (or whatever stylish civilians with manly, er well-turned legs say...)

              ;)

The slimmer the better for tall boot wear, to eliminate the "jodpur" look, says I...

                  Re: Interest in Civilian Trousers?

                  Hallo!

Western saddles having high pommels and cantles hold one in the saddle, as compared to those English "back saddles" which are little more than leather pads posing as saddles.

                  :) :)

                  My theory was...

If I could master riding back-saddle, or hunt saddle, it would improve my Western equitation so much the more. Not to mention riding with the McClellan...

                  ;)

Besides, a posting trot on an English saddle looks so "plantation master."

I would surly love to have a pair of black wool kersey civilian trouser.
I'm willing to place the order today.
