  • Early War JT Martin Fatigue Blouse

    Friends:
John T. Martin was among the most prominent contractors during the Civil War used by the Federal Quarter Master Department. Besides 1,060,000 wool flannel sack coats, Martin was contracted for several other items as well, such as trousers, flannel shirts, etc..
    - Believed to be early/mid war Martin Contract.
    - Plaid lining material of period material that resembles original as
    much as possible.
    - Sleeve markings: Right sleeve with ‘JOHN T. MARTIN/NEW YORK’
stenciled. Left sleeve with ‘JOHN T. MARTIN/NEW YORK’ stenciled
in reverse, along with sizing dotes and inspector stamp.
    - Two piece back collar with two rows stitching.
    - Additional row stitching on right facing along were buttons are
    located.

The original of this coat is owned by Mike Anderson and this project is a joint effort between Mike and Pat Brown. Coats can be ordered and will be made one at a time. A credit card reserves your coat but will not be debited until the coat ships. You can also pay by check or money order.
    Pictures of original coat below.
Price is $180 and is available in sizes up to 48.

Also available are JT Martin issue trousers and '64 contract coat.

      Jan,
One of the factors leading Pat and Mike to believe it is of earlier war provenance is that the makers mark is "John T Martin" rather than the JT Martin of the '64 contract coats.
I'll have to get back to you on the inspector stamp, although it is a New York.

Re: Early War JT Martin Fatigue Blouse

If i am not mistaken, this the JT Martin in Pat's book, "For Fatigue Purposes"? If it is, Mr. Brown states that due to its lack of an 1864 date and being marked John T Martin instead of JT Martin it is likely that it was made earlier in the war but for some reason not inspected until later on. He came to this conclusion because the inspectors mark on the coat was from a man who was not employed until 1864.

Am i correct on this being that coat?

            Chase,
I believe you are correct. It would do the hobby and myself in particular great service if Pat's book could be reprinted as I am not sure when the updated version will come out. I sold my copy to a pleading customer and I wish to heaven I had not.

The first blouses are being made and can be ordered through my site or by email or phone. Here is a picture of the lining currently being used. It is close to the original pattern but not quite 100%, am very pleased with it.
