  • CS Officers Fatigue Blouse

This fatigue blouse has been a project fifteen years in the making. Way back in 1992 I spotted the original blouse that our copy is based on in the Sept. issue of the North South Trader. I have waited for this opportunity for fifteen years, NOW IT'S HERE !!!

The original coat that we have based our copy on is, or was at the time, tenatively attributed to an unknown Captain of Artillery from Louisiana with the surname of Maynard.

While the original coat was worn by an Artillery officer and appropriately trimmed in red, our version is trimmed in Electric Blue with red being an available option.

Collar insignia is available in either English imported Gold Braid or branch of service color.

Our lining is a checked homespun pattern cotton.

We are taking orders for these with anticipated delivery time to be July.

Also available in Cadet Grey Broadcloth by Special Order.
    $349.95

Coming soon, the Thomas Vaden Brooke Sack Coat. You guys have hounded me for a correct copy of this one for almost a year. Now, it's time. Get on the list, this will be a limited run.

    Scott,

Wow...too bad I'm not an officer...

What kind of cost are we looking at on the Brooke coat and what about the trousers to go with it?

      Paul,

I'll be putting more info. out on the Brooke coat soon. I haven't decided if I want to do the blue trousers yet. The downside of doing the trousers of course, will be the fabric.

Please stop by the next time your in town.

        Scott,

Will do, nothing against the Iron City, but it's not Virginia and definently not Richmond. Sorry yall won't be physically present at McDowell this weekend, I actually managed to work my schedule to make it down for this weekend.

Of course the cloth on the Brooke trousers, I believe is the same cloth that has been in several recent trouser threads. And how about those wicked cuffs (rather sinching) on the trousers?

The problem is three fold, finding the trouser fabric, finding the fabric for the "ankle bands" and finding a dull pair of pinking shears with the right width.

I have been over run with inquiries as to whether this is the same coat in Don Troiani's book and the same one in New Orleans. The answer is NO This is a seperate piece.

Matt, if you were an officer, I would make you one.:p

                Scott,

That is one FINE looking officer's sack coat. Kudos for putting another excellent reproduction on the market!

I also look forward to seeing your reproduction of the Brooke jacket! The 17 piecings in the collar were enough to scare me away from ever trying to offer that one, but you are certainly more audacious than I for trying!

                Great job!

Oh, come on. Its only a ten piece collar with two layers of interlining, one being blue-grey wool. Not a pain at all. :tounge_sm

                    Re: CS Officers Fatigue Blouse

                    Rich and Paul,

The Brooke pantaloons, for lack of a better description, are pretty unique. It amazes me the number of dedicated researchers who continually label them to be a product of the Clothing manufactory in Richmond. (Thanks Time-Life)

When you study all of the gathering at the hips, as well as measure the width of the legs it becomes rather apparent that these bottoms were intended to be a pantaloon and are not in fact an altered garment.

In fact, in discussion with Robert, he mentioned that they could in fact be a product of European manufacture. That seems very plausible.

I am very fortunate to have the MOC in my back yard to work with. Robert is very gracious and very patient with us on our visits. We looked at several items yesterday ranging from the T.V. Brooke sack coat to the SELDEN shirt.

Usually on each visit, I check to see who has visited and I noticed that I missed you last week Rich. I wish that you had called to let me know that you were in town. I would have taken you and your pard out to lunch.

                      Scott,
We had a LOT to see (the entire Brooke & Selden collection + a few other items) and spent 5 hours in the basement breaking only to go across the street w/Robert to get a sandwich at the deli. Needless to say my head hurt and I came away determined that I now have NO idea what a Confederate soldier looked like. I mean, T.V. must have been a sight to see in that get-up of his.
Robert made the comment that the Brooke trousers, pantaloons, whatever they are, reminded him of French Chasseur trousers. I have no idea what 19th century French Chasseur trousers look like so I took Robert at his word on that one.
I plan on making one more trip down there this year, I'll shoot you an e-mail to see if you're available.

In the same conversation with Robert, mention of "possibly Federal" came up as well. Don't know much at all about particular zouave units, but the idea that they are captured pantaloons seems to make just about as much sense as any other discussion on these things.

                          Scott,

I thought this blouse looked familiar. I looked back through my photos and found a picture of the entire Maynard collection, currently on display at the Exchange Hotel Museum in Gordonsville. I've also included a couple of close-ups of the fatigue blouse. Please excuse the darkness of the photos.

Perhaps someone can refresh my memory...Is Capt. Maynard the LA Officer whose effects are at the Echange Hotel?

Important Note: The Echange Hotel sits on the rail line coming from Richmond through the Charlottesville area, because of it's proximity to the rail line, it was used as a hospital staging point where wounded C.S. troops could be shuttled to the larger hospitals in Richmond. After the War, it was used by the Freed-Mans Bureau.

                              Mr. ************,

I see from your web page that you are now offering the Selden shirt. I must admit that this is fantastic news. As you probably know, the Selden shirt is a very intricate garment with a large amount of required detail work. In fact the volume of the details are so great that they are almost impossible to duplicate without an actual visual inspection of the shirt. Also, as you probably know, even using the Facts sheet is often not enough for an accurate recreation. The Selden shirt is one of the more intriguing pieces in the collection with it's British Broad Arrow stamping and collar.

Speaking of access to museums, when I was in the MOC last week I don't remember seeing your name or that of any of your reps. on the sign in sheets. When were you guys in town anyway? I have been looking forward to meeting you for a couple of years now and really wished that you had given me a call to let me know that you were in town. We could have grabbed lunch at one of the local cafe's.

Regarding the Gordonsville Exchange Hotel, I have never personally been to visit this quaint little museum. However, I have heard wonderful things about it.

Now, just to make things clear to all of my wonderful customers, The sack coat that we have copied is not now, nor has it ever been intended to be an exact copy of the piece in the Gordonsville Museum. This coat is intended to be a generic piece that can be used almost anywhere with almost any scenario.Being a Tailor made private purchase garment, it does that precisely. And of course, all of the buttonholes are hand sewn as would be expected from any period garment and the lining is also applied by hand.

                              Cheers,
                              Fenny I Hanes
