  • New Market

If anyone is planning on attending New Market this weekend, here are some reasons to stop by the E. J. Thomas Mercantile tent:

-We have new items from our friends at Richmond Depot
-You are a re-enactor and we sell stuff re-enactors need
    -To see our traveling museum
-Sales & Specials (we will be clearing out some inventory to make room for new items)
    -We are nice people :D

We look forward to seeing you all there!

The Boy (my son) and I will be representing The Watchdog at New Market this weekend. We will drop by and thank you in person for the donation of the US 1839 cartridge box which was raffled off for battlefield preservation. See you there!

      Re: New Market

Let me hasten to add that Ross Lamoreaux was at New Market working with the field merchant EJ Thomas. Ross, a Homerically proportioned and well nourished lad with an eye for fine attire, veritably filled the EJT tent. The crowd of patrons inside forced him to do his hand sewing out front like a cigar store Indian. From what I observed, Ross Lamoreaux has some very interesting and well made products to compliment the excellent goods EJT offers, and I hope he submits one or more of them to the Watchdog for evaluation. We are fortunate to have such craftsmen as these in our hobby.

I also felt fortunate to find a new pipe...a real upgrade from what I was using, from EJT. It was reasonably priced and accurately produced from an original on hand by their tinsmith, "Ulrich". The tin pipe I purchased from EJT was their last one. I hope it is a product they will continue to carry because I have been known to burn some tobacco and the pipe drew quite a few positive comments from those astute enought to recognize such things. One of the enjoyable aspects of visiting EJ Thomas at an event is the "trip to the museum", where you can inspect the authentic (meaning original) artifacts from which their products are faithfully reproduced. At most field merchants the best you usually find is a picture in a book, but the originals right there to hold in hand and inspect is a huge plus for those who want to "Get It Right".

Uncharacteristically small numbers at New Market with a mixed bag in terms of the overall quality of mid-1864 ANV/AoP impressions; rare good weather and possibly rarest of all, a historically accurate Yankee quorum, all combined for a fine weekend.
