  • Karin Timour: First Rate!

When I decided to attend the Duck River Line and spend the end of January freezing in Tennessee, I called Karin on the hunt for some knit goods. I had some questions about mittens and scarves because my knowledge of period knit items is quite lacking to say the least. Karin was more than happy to field my questions and share what she has found in her research, which interested me more and more as she kept going. Before she began to explain things to me, she let me know that she has been known to go on for a bit about these subjects and that I should feel free to stop her. Did I? No! In fact, after talking for a while, I would pose another quick question just so she would share more. Her knowledge and information had me glued to the phone.

I cannot say enough about Karin’s efforts in taking on this project for me. She took my order for mittens and a scarf a short time before the craziness of the holidays and was even generous enough to finish my order before I leave for the event this weekend. When I got home from work today, I found my order had arrived and impatiently tearing open the package, I slid the mittens on, threw the scarf around my neck, and could not be happier with them! Karin not only met what I had in mind with these reproductions, but she surpassed what I had expected! Simply first rate!

I had first heard about Karin’s work around the campfire here and there, and was very impressed seeing her samples of socks at Corinth in 2005. Even straggling through sutler row, battling food poisoning and nausea at that event, I still remember pointing out how taken I was with her reproductions. And now, after having spoken with her and being a proud owner of some of her work, I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for top notch knit goods!

    Karin,
It was a pleasure talking with you and I cannot wait to read your future articles on your research! I will be in touch very soon about socks as well. There are so many choices, I don’t know where to begin! You went above and beyond for me on this project. Thank you. I hope to be a continuing customer for a long time!

    Dear Jim:

Thank you very much for your kind words, am glad that everything arrived on time. As a sutler it's a pure pleasure to make things for customers who appreciate one's efforts. I love talking about knit goods and it's a lot of fun to talk to someone who wants to know more.

I'd also like to thank those who have been patiently waiting for your orders. My father's health problems culminated this fall in a diagnosis of double hip replacement. The preparations before the first surgery have taken my much of my time and attention away from knitting. He's had the first hip done, is well on his way to recovery and I'm back on the knitting needles.

    Sincerely,
    Karin Timour

I was fortunate to speak with Karin at High Tide last year and will second Mr. Conley's praise. She is certainly a wealth of knowledge and the products she had on display were amazing. I ordered myself a pair of socks and I know the day they show up will be one for the books! Yea, it's crazy to think I would ever get this excited about socks, but they are just that good.

And for those interested in reading more about socks (at least the Federal Issue socks) you should get a hold of a CR Research Compendium and check out Karin's article.

I have a pair of Karin’s federal issue socks and I couldn’t agree with Bill more when he mentioned getting excited over socks. A good friend ordered a pair and when I saw his I was blown away to say the least. I had to have a pair, its little things like socks that in my mind set a good impression apart from a killer one. I have had lots of hand knit socks over the years and these are by far some of the best ones I have owned. I have seen and handled a few period knit items and what took me was the weight of the yarn Karin used and how close it compared to the originals I have seen. Anyone who is serious about having all the little things a soldier carried shouldn’t be without a pair of good federal issue socks.

            Gentlemen:

Thank you for your kind words, you've made my week!

I get asked a lot "Why not make this stuff faster -- just change the yarn and get an electrified machine and you could produce seven times as much." I know the other authentic sutlers get a lot of the same questions. It's the thrill of reproducing an artifact "just right" where you know that it will perform the same way in the field as the gear of the soldiers of the 1860s.

It's your appreciation that keeps us at it.

            Thank you again,
