  • Knit Shirt by Brian White

Just wanted to let you know I received a knit shirt from Brian White of Wambaugh, White & Co. and I have to say that it is BEYOND expectations for a custom made garment!!! For some time now, I've been wanting one of these and I know there are others who've been looking for one too. I'll let Brian/Dan chime in if they can make more.

The material is truly exceptional and is different than any other knit material I've ever seen available offered from other vendors. The off-center placket Brian constructed is another nice touch he added that you see from time to time on original garments. The other detail that makes this a true work of art - the makers stamp of a PEC supplier of undergarments of the period that he added to the button placket. This is a custom made stamp based on meticulous research they are known for.

Others have posted their experiences about dealing with Dan or Brian as to both craftsmanship and customer service; my experience mirrors those other customers as well!!! What else can I say that hasn't already been discussed previously. They know what they're doing!!!

Overall, this is a WONDERFUL piece that exemplifies the minutiae of the period and adds to the living history culture/experience of which we are a part.

See photos below. They can speak for themselves.

James, thank you for the glowing review and kind words! That shirt was fun to make, although it took me a while due to travel and an ever-growing backlog of "stock" work. You guys should see the other side of the fabric, the striped side you see in James' photos is actually the wrong side. The true face of the knit cloth is a chocolate brown and cream colored checkered pattern...it almost gives me vertigo just looking at it!

For those interested I am developing a limited run of "European" style undershirts and drawers made from KNIT SILK as per the original examples. These will be based on the set of underclothes on display at Pamplin Park and worn by Captain Charles Gould of the 5th Vermont (Troiani collection).

In addition to the silk underclothes, I have a limited supply of natural rib-knit wool that I intend to make into Federal issue knit shirts. I have found examples of this shirt in photographs dating from 1862 to 1865 and ranging from Washington to Savannah. With a bit more time and development I will be able to have the proper knit cuffs made. These are one of the most important features that will lend a great deal to the authenticity of the shirts, along side the fact that these shirts will be made of wool rather than cotton!

Keep your eyes on the Announcements page for more information.

Yeah, the type with the "plastron" front that buttons all the way to the bottom, and matching yoked drawers. I'm even having the Parisian stamps made soon!

So Mr. White, do you plan on making any more of these shirts? I'd be interested in one for a civilian impression that I'm putting together.

                Ron,

We had discussed doing a run but could not get any more of the material. We will keep our eyes peeled, but as with everything our little community feeds on the end runs and cast offs of the garment industry.

                    Mr. Wagner,

Knowing Brian/Dan, I'm sure they'll find something else that'll make you happy.

I'd stay tuned... you never know what they'll pull out of the hat!
