  • Thank You Ben Tart

Just got my Ben Tart commutation jacket blank of bark dyed jean wool today. It fits perfectly on me and is just very good in every respect. I bought some very good civilian buttons from another sutler for the jacket. Thank you Ben Tart for your dedication and hard work that is very evident on the jacket.

    Mr. Brening,
Do you get directions with the blank or is that it, just a blank in the box? Also, what does the bark jean look like?

Oh yeah there is directions that come with it. The color of the jean is gray with some brown showing on some threads. I would post a picture of it, but at this moment I am not able to do so. Also forgot to mention that the jacket is lined with osnaburg. Are you thinking about ordering a jacket blank from Ben Tart? Just wondering. ;)

I've made several of Ben Tart's blank and markup kits, and am about to order a Civilian Sack Coat markup. They come with instructions and everything needed save for thread and buttons.

One of the absolute best values out there for those who can sew.

          Re: Thank You Ben Tart

I might order a richmond depot type II jacket blank and a RD trouser blank in the near future. A good winter project. I'm not the best ( but pretty good) at sewing, so I just go a level at a time.

I already own one of his Sumac jackets and a pair of Tan jean trousers, so I'm familiar with his work.

Will he do any custom dyes, say Walnut?

I do not know if he would do custom dyes. I too picture buying from Ben Tart in the near future.

Ben does offer a real nice Walnut dyed Jean Cloth on a seasonal basis.

I bought fabric from him in the early 90's and also just last year. Always great stuff.
A question though: Anyone here ever get a Federal blouse from him? Opinions on those?

                  Jon,
When does he offer his Walnut jean?

                  Warren,
I would think the options would be the same as anywhere els, but I don't own a blouse from him so I can't give you a defenite answer on that.

                      Thanks Phil.

Also, who makes an accurate civillian shirt pattern? I've been looking for a good pattern and wanted to check here first.

I would also reccomend Ben's Lodwood jean.

Your welcome, I know the book Thoughts On Mens Shirts offers a number of patterns. The website The Sewing Academy has a section just for men's shirts. And I was not the only person who just bought from Ben Tart. My unit's leader acquired some wheat satinette and had made into a pair of trousers.

                          James,
I think Charlie Childs of County Cloth carries a couple of shirt patterns based off of originals. Also, you might consider obtaining a shirt kit from W&W. Get the kit, traces the pieces, and now you have a pattern for that next shirt. (W&W also carries good shirt fabric.)
