m1840 Springfield Musket

The model 1840 musket was the last effort of the Ordnance Department to have a flintlock musket with interchangeable parts. 30,421 muskets were made at Springfield arsenal, including 8,600 in 1843. Additional muskets would be supplied by contractors Daniel Nippes and Lemuel Pomeroy. The vast majority of m1840 muskets were converted to percussion in the 1850s. Originally in flintlock, this musket was converted to percussion via the "Belgium" method by plugging the touch hole and upsetting the barrel and seating a new cone directly into the barrel. This musket is in good condition, with minor pitting and handling marks in the wood. The lock is mechanically and the ramrod is full length. The bore is average. Most Civil War collections have m1822 or m1842 muskets, but m1840 muskets are harder to find, especially in good condition.

This musket belongs in any collection of 19th century U.S. Military shoulder arms, Civil War collection- both Federal and Confederate, or someone wishing to show the story of how the US military upgraded flintlock to percussion arms. For the living historian, this musket represents an excellent early war Federal weapon that saw use through early 1863, and for Confederates, through a majority of the War. Equally important, for someone wishing to shoot leisurely, or competitively, would do well in the N-SSA.
