  • Uniforms, Weapons and Equip

    Hi,

I am new to Authentic Campaigner, and I was wandering, Does anyone know what type of Musket I need? I am a Private in the 8th Kansas Infantry, a western unit. I am thinking either the enfield or the 61 springfield.

    Thanks'

    Seargent Davis

    Hallo!

Interesting name there, Herr "Seargent.." ;)

Seriously, I would recommend using the SEARCH function to browse the various posts on the concept of Mental Pictures of what you see yourself doing and where you seeing yourself fitting in?

There are number of different approaches such as what is your unit's standard for weapons on the one hand, and on the other what does research and documentation show for your unit's time and place.
For example, for 1863 ammunition requisitions for the 8th Kansas shows .58 ammuniiton, which implies either the M1855 or M1861 (and being 1863-1864 possibly leaning more toward the M1861).

        Hello

Try this web site www.kansasguardmuseum.org you will find most of the history of the 8th there as well as pic's the part of the history that is missing is in reguards to the company that came out of Illinois and that Col. Graham came from there as well.

Also you could try contacting the Rock Island Argus news paper in Rock Island IL they have in there archives detailed reports from Col. Graham about the Reg (Graham owned the paper) but in the past they have not been very warm to request but this was 10+ years ago.

Since you are new to the A/C one thing people will tell you all the time here...
Use the search function first I made the mistake before but there are so many good threads out there! Also Look for some period records for your unit. Most town historical societys have some great information stowed away just waiting. Dont be afraid to make phone calls and write lettes youde be surprised how much info you can get. Also I just looked in my Arms List per Unit and it says the 8th Kansas was issued A mix of 1855 and 1861 Springfields. The 1855 were issued with the standard bayonet not the sword type. This is off the Origional Issue of the unit. They may have been issued others later on but My opinion is to go with one of the above you can use for all periods with that Unit. I hope this helps a bit it is from An Introduction to Civil War Small Arms.Earl J. Coates and Dean S Thomas. The info is on page 87.

You should wander up to the NCO's in your company and ask for a uniform and equipment guidline for your units impression.

                  Gentleman,
My good friend and comrade Bill McFarland has recently published his book entitled "Keep the Flag to the Front" The Story of the Eighth Kansas Volunteer Infantry. It is currently available on Amazon. I'm anxiously awaiting my copy.
