  • Re: Massive Todd Watts Enfield Defarb!!!

Mike did some defarb work for me last year on my Armisport Enfield, and he did a first class job. The barrel was whitened twenty years ago, but two decades of use and abuse took its toll on the metal, as well as the stock. Mike reshaped the parts of the stock that needed it, put a new coat of finish on the wood, and made the barrel and the metal furniture shine like new. I also had him add the proper import stamps and such to the weapon; knowing that I don't do Confederate anymore, Mike made sure to do the proper BSAT marks for Federal importation. At this point, I'm just waiting on some money to come in to have him swap out the Armisport lock for a properly marked one....which I've been saying for twenty years....and still haven't found the money.

I'll also second Aaron's remark...I met Mike right around the time I first got back into the hobby in 2009. He's a good man. A very good man. If he does work for you, he'll do you right.

I've known Mike for about 10 yrs. Met him at Fighting Withdrawal and we became good friends over the years.
He defarbed my 41 last year and did a tremendous job. He browned the barrel, reshaped the stock and applied a linseed oil finish. I couldn't be happier with the results. He even found a .54 ramrod for it.

BSAT did not necessarily mean Federal importation. The BSAT made guns that were sold to purchasers from both sides. BSAT marks also appear on originals with Confederate markings (JS-anchor, etc.). BSAT-marked guns are a small minority of originals seen today anyway. Just my 2 cents on BSAT markings ...

Geoff is right on the money there. By extension the commercial gunmakers in London and Birmingham sold to whomever (whichever side) it was legal to sell to. I know there is documentation of a large order from JE Barnett & Sons that went to the Union when the Confederacy defaulted on the payment deadline.

You are correct about the stamps Geoff and Craig. I used Swinburn and Sons and a standard BSAT stock stamp on the musket. I think the confusion is on the acceptance stamp that I put. I was told by the individual I purchased the stamps from that one of them was for Federal importation. I have since learned that that info is not necessarily correct and do not say that anymore. I was in error telling Bob that at the time.

My ignorance does not rebuke the quality of Mr. Comer's physical work and manner in which it was done. I am extremely pleased with the high quality of the physical work done on my Enfield, and will continue to recommend Mike's work.

I have also purchased a defarbed Enfield from Mr. Comer. He does great work. Not only that, but he has been a great friend and mentor to me since I got into "the biz." He is honest and very helpful when it comes to improving your impression and firearms.

Been off the AC forums for a while. Glad to see another defarber is here. Look forward to seeing a Comer gun sometime.

Just got my Enfield back from Todd Watts, and all I can say is WOW!! He turned a beat up, half defarbed, repop into a sexy looking shooter! The stock is so much better, I can hardly believe it. The rust bluing is fantastic, and the color of the lock plate is much nicer than the original. Even the bayonet got the once over and looks like it just came out of the crate with the rifle in Savannah. It wasn't fast, but it is worth the wait and he earned every penny of his fee.
