Ogdensburg, Wisconsin ( the photographer's 'location') is North of Waupaca, West of New London. (NW of Lake Winnebago / West of Greenbay in the North Central part of the state for you non-Badgers).

    August 20, 1863...

"Acting Mounted to General Hancock" courier???

How many of our Infantry reenactors would be able to mount up and gallop at a moment's notice.....

    Cool Stuff!

Wonder if they had this stuff at the front.....or in camp....or could even play the instruments?

I have a CDV for sale of Robert E. Lee - though he's dressed up as a Union general and wearing a W.T. Sherman rubber mask..... And the photographer cleverly disguised his backmark too. :)

Nothing like images of period musical instruments. Past that.....

        Re: 5th Wisconsin "guitar" image

        Greetings,

An individual who is very knowledgeable about 19th century guitars sent this to me after looking at the "5th Wisconsin" image:

"The guitar looks like it may be English, or a copy of an English maker with the arched peg head slots. That design started in England about 1825. Most American makers were a bit more linear with those slots but also copied European pattterns to meet the needs of the customer."

Notice the heart shape on the bottom of the left hand figure's boot. Hobnails?
          Nice picture, thanks for sharing.
