I'm attempting to gather what information I can find on bedding such as blankets and quilts used by Federal troops. As far as repros go, we are very limited to good, correct blankets. To be honest, blankets are just as important to a good impression as a proper sack or hat... or any other item for that matter. There's the Keagy/Noble and the out-of-production Woodburn blanket but are there any others that surpass merely being "acceptable"? The only other option that I can come up with at this time is a correct quilt of the period. We have an original in the family which was a wartime "bring-back" by a GG uncle who was a member of the 1st MICH SS. We know that it was actually used because it still has a bloodstain from a wound recieved at Spotsylvania.
Should everyone be exactly alike as if they came from the same mold? I know that this has been discussed before but sometimes it's good to revisit things and reexamine them occaisionally. There's a difference between a situation of "anything goes" for the sake of individuality and that of realistic variation. One way is how one wears their clothing. Another way is slight, but authentic variations in color shades of standard issue items. There was a great deal of "patent goods" in use, but there's not much representation of this in LH. Probably because most items would be "one-off" items, but that doesn't necessarily negate them if a person was skilled in reproduction.
PEC is good, but can it be taken so far as to become inauthentic?
...just a thought.
My thoughts are that even these mundane items/ aspects of the military culture deserve the same level of focus and scrutiny as the more recognizable pieces of our gear. Does anyone have any other suggestions, comments, etc...?
