    Hi

I have a reproduction of the cartridge box you are seeking. When I have some spare time I will get you the measurements (in metric of course). What parts do you want measured exactly? I know it is not an original but it is the best I can do to help.

From what I can tell it was issued from 1862 until the end of the war as the lack of leather started to bite. It was mainly issued throughout the western theater but at least two boxes can be traced to Virginia. I don't have any hard evidence on hand right now, this is just from memory. Hopefully others will help back me up on this (or prove me wrong).

    Kind Regards

      Hi,

I would bet that Don Smith has lots of information on the box, so you may want to contact him.

        Re: Painted Cloth Cartridge Box

In fact it's for one friend who would like to make it by our friend Jan, I think that it is effectively quite necessary the measures, but Jan who is on this forum, can say to us about it more...
For the information, I have that on cap pouch given by friend Bazoo, but nothing else onto cartridge garage, to part E&G.

"Every Confederate soldier who carried a gun had a waterproof cap box to store and protect a supply of percussion caps. A firearm without a cap was useless. The most common Confederate cap box is easily distinguished from its Yankee counterpart by a single, wide, leather belt loop and lead closing finial affixed to a leather box. A much rarer version, made of painted canvas was produced within the Confederacy. All known maker-marked painted canvas accoutrements were made in Columbus, Georgia, home to the South’s largest painted canvas manufacturing concerns-Brands & Corner and the Eagle Manufacturing Company.

Though this box is unmarked it was most likely made for, or by, the Columbus, Georgia Depot. From this depot they were shipped to the various Confederate Armies.

Although painted canvas accoutrements were made in large numbers, surviving examples are exceedingly rare. Canvas accoutrements are especially desirable because they clearly illustrate the South’s ingenuity and lack of resources.

The example shown here is an excellent example of a painted canvas percussion cap box. The canvas is in nearly perfect condition; the leather latch tab was broken and has had a new one spliced in. This was well done and cannot be seen from the outside. The leather of one of the end caps appears slightly different than the other so one may be a period or later replacement. The lead finial is tight and the canvas is as good as any I have ever seen. All of the stitching remains intact and tight."

Thanks to you two for your answers...

Maxime, you have to sign every post with your full name;-)
Detailed info about these oil cloth accoutrements would be much appreciated as getting infos directely from originals is pretty hard here in Europe.
I don't care if the measurements are in inches or cm I can convert them easily.
            Thanks everybody in advance!

              Re: Painted Cloth Cartridge Box

              G´day William and Jan,

well there are three different painted canvas cartridge boxes in the book
              "Collecting the Confederacy" .

Two of them obviously made by T. N. Crown & Company in Columbus;Georgia.

              Some good pics included.
Unfortunatly the description is without measurements.

If you do not have this book give me a p.m.

              Regards

              Ingo
