I would recommend getting familiar with locally owned fabric shops in your area. All too often there are great resources right under your nose. For example, there is a quilt shop in my home town (http://www.quiltersharvest.com/) that offers a wide variety of homespun cotton and reproductions of period PRINTED fabrics (something you don't see a lot on reproduction clothing very often!!).

I can't find a website, but 96th District Storehouse has a HUGE friggin' selection of cottons, silks, and the other items you mention. Here is some contact info, but I don't know how current it is:

Charlie - FHW doesn't sell fabric retail any more. They simply (as I understand it) provide a weaving service. Individuals are on their own to provide yarns and get the goods finished. Some vendors have FHW make up fabrics (like Scott Hanes) which they then offer for sale.

When it comes to fabric, the actual website is about useless. The telephone is not. Pick up the phone. Sometimes you'll get Peggy or Dennis, unless they are on the road. If they are gone, you'll get Peggy's Mama--and she's forgotten more about fabric than most of us will ever know.

I have on occassion called, and simply told them what I wanted to accomplish, and for what time period. The fabric cut I purchased was perfect--and came to me sight unseen, just based on phone discussions.

Needle and Thread in Gettysburg can be one stop shopping for FHW, Charlie Childs and Ben Tart material. Not to mention wool tape, cottons, osnaburg, webbing, buttons, etc.

Online fabric stores like Fashion Fabrics Club have pretty good selections. I've ordered cottons, silks, linen, and knit wool from them in the past. You may also want to check out Vogue Fabrics in Chicago and the Field's Fabrics chain of stores throughout west Michigan. Some of my stock fabrics that I've been using for years have come from Field's, which seems to carry an inexhaustible supply. Field's Fabrics also has some of the cheapest prices around; wool seems to perpetually be priced at 40% to 60% off. Yoder's Department Store in Shipshewana, IN has a pretty nice selection including tons of linens, kersey, broadcloth, flannel, knit woolens, historical prints, woven plaids, silks, and sometimes worsted wool and silk trim. If you go with Vogue, Field's, or Yoder's you will want to call them and ask for samples of what you're looking for...their online stores absolutely do not compare to what they have available in their shops.

I think some of this forum have used Manhattan Fabrics (http://www.manhattanfabrics.com/) before. I haven't but they occasionally have nice and less expensive things. Generally, expect to pay for it.

I just haven't found THE fabric I want yet. Will keep looking.

These posts have been truly helpful in my uniform projects. I do have a question about broadcloth though. I am looking for high quality cadet grey broadcloth which will not "fuzz" when it is washed. I am trying to construct an artillery officer’s jacket for our living history program here at Vicksburg. Could anyone direct me in the direction of a good provider of such a fabric?

I don't know many places that offer cadet gray material, Jarnigan's material isn't bad, Hainsworth might also carry that color. But regardless of what you get you should not be washing it. If you want to preshrink the material you could take a piece of cotton the same size as the piece of wool, dampen it, lay it on top of the wool, and roll it up until its dried. Afterwards you will want to iron the wool. But completely soaking the wool is usually a bad idea, and you don't even want to think of using a machine drier. Good luck finding the material!
