  • Redemption of Government Property

Came across the following newspaper article today from Mike Gorman's excellent Civil War Richmond website:

    From the Richmond Dispatch, 11/13/1862, p. 1, c. 4
Reclamation of Government Property. – The Provost Marshal's detectives on Tuesday visited the vicinity of Cold Harbor, and brought away from houses in the vicinity a number of muskets, Mississippi rifles, 26 overcoats, 15 pairs of pantaloons, 20 shirts, and other articles gotten from the battlefield by the parties in possession. They were brought to the city for distribution among the soldiers. Yesterday a number of army shirts and other articles belonging to the Government, and found in retail stores, were also seized.
