  • AASLH article on Authenticity

The Autumn 2008 issue of History News, the magazine from the American Association of State and Local History, has an article entitled "Authenticity? It Means Everything". It is an interpretation of a survey conducted with living history museum visitors. While it is geared toward the living history museum, there are some interesting points that individual living historians may wish to review.

So, you think that scrap in the East is rough, do you?
Ever consider what it means to be captured by Apaches?

      Re: AASLH article on Authenticity

      Annette,
I wanted to say thank you again for alerting us about this article. I had asked the curator at one of the museums I volunteer with if he could get a copy and Saturday they had all the historical interpreters to read it before starting the day.

It certainly has some good insights both regarding how museums might better engage visitors. While focusing on museum audiences, the article and companion blog provides real insights into what attendees to living histories and even mainstream reenactments are likely looking for, particularly as relates to authenticity.

      Great stuff!
