  • Broadfall trousers

    Hallo!

The posting of "Confederate" broadfall trousers and the discussion on clothes from home makes this image (broadfall or bib) interesting:

    Curt,

Are you talking about the kid leaning against the tree in the right foreground? Or the guys milling around in the background with their hands "straight down" into pockets?

Not sure if I'm seeing "broadfall" or "bibbed" trousers here; the number of contract-made Fed. trousers I've seen that had factory-original horizontal "slash pockets" is pretty high...could be those but appear as bibbed trousers at a blurry distance.

The kid's pants look super baggy and possibly made from a lighter weight kersey or something else altogether, with side seam pockets.

They look more like pockets to me than broadfall trousers.

          Curt,
This photo is great! Thanks for sharing it!

If we're talking about the fellow leaning against the tree, I'm thinking they may be pockets and a fly that has "puffed out" a bit in the front. It would be great to get a blown up view to be certain.

          Merry Christmas,

Geez. How many times as an enlistee in the Green Machine of the 1960s was I told to take my (bleeping) hands out of my (bleeping) pockets. Must be no sergeants nearby when this shot was taken. Having said that, two of these figures appear to sport trouser stripes; the guy to the left of the tree (who doesn't appear to wear rank on his arm) and the officer(?) w/o shoulder straps in the long coat smoking a pipe near the barrel chimney. Nice photo.

              Re: Broadfall trousers

I can spy three fellows with trousers in this photo.
              1. Obviously the fellow to the left of the barrel chimney.
              2. The fellow to the right of 1. It looks like he has lighter colored stripes, anyone else agree?
              3. The fellow on the left with his foot on a stump/box/barrel and one hand in his pocket.

Those winter huts look to be quite substantial as well.

                  Hallo!

Yes the youthful lad leaning against the tree.

                  Here is a detail:

The side seam of the trousers or overalls is visible below his right hand.
There appears to be no center fly (Although I considered that the the trousers might be oversized and the fly pulled to the left fooling the camera.)
There appears to be a waistband with a button visible in front of his right hand.
The shirt gives the illusion of the "bib" of bib overalls.
The white line appears to be a pocket watch chain, but the location of the watch and where the chain would be attached to doesn't quite jive.

                  Appears...

                    Re: Broadfall trousers

                    Hi,

The men in the back (with their hands in their pockets) might be wearing SA issue trousers with mule ear pockets. Just a thought.

tall boots AND a fairly long sack coat. private purchase??
It looks like several private purchase sack coats that I have seen, so you are most likely right.

From the diary of Sir Arthur James Lyon Fremantel

April 2, 1863 -"I crossed the river from Bagdad with Mr. Ituria, at 11 o'clock; and as I had no pass, I was taken before half-a-dozen Confederate officers, who were seated round a fire contemplating a tin of potatoes. These officers belonged to Duff's cavalry (Duff being my Texan's partner.) Their dress consisted simply of flannel shirts, very ancient trousers, jack-boots with enormous spurs, and black felt hats, ornamented with the "lone star of Texas." They looked rough and dirty, but were extremely civil to me."
