Ok, not something any infantryman or artillerist wants to see an an event, but as an assistant surgeon, I am in need of some authentic projectiles. Looking for federal issue .58 and .69 pressed balls if available. If not, then would like to find a very good cast version.

Also any suggestions for creating ones which have the appearance of hitting bone?

    Harry:

Depending on your location, finding original projectiles of any caliber is not the issue. Most, however, will carry the patina of 145 years as opposed to the brand spanking new ones that killed and maimed so many.

I would order a pack of live rounds from Mike Watson (Cartridges Unlimited) and fire them at a piece of pig purchased for the purpose. It will not get much closer than that. A little work but...

If you can't get your hands on a piece of pig, I would recommend shooting at something that will be hard and splinter similar to a bone. We have gotten some nice minie's from shooting at plywood into a soft mound of dirt.

It would be alot easier cleaning authentic pieces of lead than going through all of that and would be alot cheaper.

          Re: Projectiles

          Hallo!

Aside from some N-SSA lads experimenting years ago, I know of no one swedging Minies these Daze...

Speaking of the N-SSA, the best source for shot, "mushroomed,' and otherwise impact mutilated fired Minies is the backstops at N-SSA skirmish sites.
We used to go out and "pick the backers" to glean bucketsful of spent Minies that could be smelted and recast to save lead costs.

Perhaps if you have any N-SSA friends, or current N-SSA members here, could volunteer to "pick up" some for you?

            Harry,

Contact me off the forum with your needs. I've been in the N-SSA for 30 years so I have plenty of lead rounds. Plus I live next door to the N-SSA's home range, Ft Shenandoah. I'll make sure you get what you need for your display
