  • 1st Texas Flag at Gettysburg

    Gent,

Our merry band of brothers will be hosting an event at G-Burg in Aug. I want to make the state flag of the 1st Texas for our event. I've seen the flag of the 1st that was captured at Antietam in the cornfield. A second flag was made for the Reg. by the same women who made the first. The second flag as I understand was trimmed with black crepe to honor the dead of the Reg.
In the book of" Devils Den" it states: George A. Branard, the color bearer, glorified himself when he found "the highest and largest rock on the crest" and "planted the adorned standard of the Texans, adorned with the Lone Star, shining far off to friend and foe, with the effulgence of its glory."
My Question is: The Size of the flag, and if anybody can lead me in the direction of a picture or description of this flag. I would like to make it as authentic as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Art -

When we did the 1st Texas for our annual march in '06, I dug everywhere to find the same information, and came up empty. I ended up using the dimensions stated for the previous flag.

Also, I reproduced the miniature version of the 1st National that was reportedly affixed to the top of the state flag's staff.

If I can find my sources, I'll pass them on...they were more readily available when I was living and working in the 'burg, of course.

      Marc,

Thanks for the info & great pix. We too have come up somewhat empty on a lead to where there standard is. Your flag looks great with the miniature of the Stars & Bars affix to the top. We'll be making the march to Devils Den on Saturday later in the afternoon. Hopefully we'll have a good a time as you and your pards did. I will start this project come summer so any other info would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

        Marc,
What route did the LR take for the march? We'll have to apply for a marching permit and from the pictures you posted it looks like your route was pretty authentic. The pictures of you crossing the stream (Plum Run?) look especially cool.

          Joe -

We stepped off from West Confederate and Emmitsburg Rd., and went straight across in the general direction of the Weikert/Timbers farm. The usefulness of the boulders on the ridge prior to crossing Plum Run is immediately recognizable when you hit it from that direction.

After we wrapped up at Devils Den, we went down and around to their July 3rd position and discussed the cavalry action, but with the weather being what it was, it seemed a little extra.
