  • looking for info on the 7th Tx. Inf. & 2nd S.C. Inf.

    Pards,
We trying to put together the impressions for Wolcott Mill 2009. The two Confederate regiments we are considering are: the 7th Texas Infantry and the 2nd South Carolina. These units opposed the 22nd Michigan & the 89th Ohio on Hill 3 of the Horseshoe ridge at Chickamauga (Federal impressions). The terrian at Wolcott Mill fits the scenario. We need to know what their uniforms looked like so we can see if either regiment can be duplicated.

    Thanks in advance,

Here are some thoughts for beginning your research-

1995 dissertation Intrepid Gray Warrior, The Seventh Texas 1861-1865. The dissertation was written by James Newsom, in turbulent of a doctoral degree from T.C.U. "Newsom's dissertation contains approximately, 200 pages of solid research data," commented Drake. "After I learned of the document, I immediately tried to purchase a copy. However, I found that it was not available since it was dissertation material and not yet in book form. I finally had the Eudora Welty Library, order the dissertation through a library program known as the Inter-library Loan. Within weeks, I had a copy."

The 7th Texas was a bad-ass regiment. Hardy men.

I'd personally recommend a Columbus Depot jacket, possibly a Dept of Alabama jacket.

    Regards,
    Fred Baker

You might consider looking at the WIG/SWB ANV guidelines for the 2007 Chickamauga Living History. The chosen persona for the ANV was the 7th SC - same brigade (Kershaw's) as the 2nd SC. The chosen impression for the AoT was the 7th Tex.

If you can find it, "A History of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry" by Mac Wyckoff could be useful. Good luck with your research!

            Seventh Texas Infantry

If you can get to a university library, Newsom's dissertation is available full image through Digital Dissertations. His master's thesis, also on the 7th, is available for loan from my library, the University of Texas at Tyler. Title: Grand phalanx of intrepid infantry : the seventh Texas, 1861-1865. I would run upstairs and check for uniforms, but as you probably know, theses are not indexed, and I'm having no luck making the search function work in DD. James is an instructor here, and could, I'm sure, talk your ear off on the topic! We keep urging him to get his dissertation in shape for a book.
