Pards,
As I see it,there is always so much variation in Confereate gear that this may be an unanswerable question. Here goes, what constitutes a Confederate officers Sword belt? I am referring to Cavalry. The pictures in Eog and the sheer multitude of different models lends this question to be answered be saying,Whatever!
One "expert' said it was whether it had a shoulder strap(Sam Brown belt) or not.The quality of the buckle appears to have a place here as well as the quality of the leather.Battlefield pickups were represented,as the Confederacy was very short on leather after 1863.Folded leather seems to be either very early war or high rank.I have not seen one fancy stitched belt with a Confederate pedigree.Lastly, what are the thoughts on the dye, meaning russet vs black. Some of the arguements regarding fading of the copperas dye I am aware of,but lots of russet was issued from Clarksville harness shops to be distributed by the Richmond Depot.
Your thoughts please, Regards,R.Harris
