Re: Help Identify this Corps Badge

    Greetings Mark,

First of all, are we even sure it's a wartime vintage cap? Looking at it from the top, it looks like a postwar GAR or possible state militia/National Guard cap.

If you have different pics, maybe they will be of assistance.

      Hallo Kamerad!

Sorry, but I just see an amorphous, one solid color, silhouette on this computer.

        Mark,

Here's one possibility (assuming the cap is 1860's era): The badge is a variant of the badge for Hancock's 1st Veteran Corps, which sported a "seven pointed figure with a center circle." Here's a link so you can look for yourself:

"Hancock's First Veteran Corps did not function as an army corps. It was an effort to reenlist discharged veteran soldiers into U.S. rather than state units. By the end of the war only ten scattered regiments [10,883 men] were enrolled."

What do you think? Is there a name attached to this item?

I was wondering if it was the 22d Corps:

            You Know,

I was thinking that it was an example (the 1st I've seen) of a Hancock's Veteran Reserve badge also. The 22nd Corps, although they "officially" adopted a badge, it doesn't seem that anyone took to wearing one in that corps. Just curious though, in what state is the museum in? Take care.

You might be onto something. Something to note how this badge is attached with pins on each point, very similar to the your picture mark

I'll keep digging, and with luck, I might uncover some information as to the owner.

This cap is located in Indianapolis, Indiana

Is that at the Lilly Museum downtown? They have a bunch of weird stuff there. I saw an infantry first sergeant uniform coat that was black with artillery officer buttons. Not sure what it all means.

Re: Help Identify this Corps Badge

I believe we have pinned it down to Hancocks 1st Veteran Corps. Thanks Mark J. for the information.

This medal was presented to Maj. William H. Munn by Co. F, 24th Reg. He was a Major in the Hancock*s 1st Veteran Corps which originated 12/1864 in Washington. They were assigned 3/1865 to 2nd Brig. Provisional Div. Army of Shenandoah to 6/1865. This was composed of veterans who had already served full terms in their Regiments in 1st corps.

The construction of the cap, style , and evidence of extensive wear on the inside will place this cap circa 1861-1865.

Thanks goes to the Indianapolis Childrens Museum and collections coordinators.
