    Re: Spaulding jacket/Illinois Infantry Jackets

Ok Pards, I was finally able to get to the museum and gain access to the jacket. Since I do not know how to post pictures, I will need some assistance from the War Dept when she gets home. I first noticed that the buttons are reproduction "Waterbury." However, in my opinion, the jacket itself appears to be the real thing. It is definitely old, as shown by moth holes in the sleeves and other places on the uniform, in addition to wear to the top of the collar. There are no buttons or chevrons on the sleeves, no epaulets, no belt loop, and no outside pocket. It is a six piece construction of dark blue wool. The inside lining is white (unbleached) cotton muslin, with apparent dark sweat stains. The sleeves are lined with a silky-like white material that may be synthetic (possibly added much later?). There is a marking in the left sleeve, however, it is too faded to make out. There is a pocket on the left side, similar to a sack coat. Since I am no expert, I leave it to you guys to determine whether this coat is the real thing, or not. I hope the pictures help.
In an aside, I was able to recover all of my loaned items from the museum, making for a most rewarding afternoon. Thanks for your patience!

Yes, pictures please. I'm somewhat concerned about the presence of repro buttons and synthetic lining material on a museum artifact. Wool reenactor uniforms from after the Centennial are now pushing 50 years already and will show wear. Genuine moth holes can develop by just leaving it hanging up in a garage.

If it would be easier for you, you might email the pictures to me and I would be happy to post them for you.

Hmmm. I could not venture a determination on this jacket without seeing photographs. Something doesn't seem right from the description.

            Ok.

Going to bring this back from the dead due to my current obsession with Federal State jackets. Found this online, I.D'ed as brothers Hiram & William Gripman, Co. "I" 3rd Minnesota Infantry. The jacket looks a lot like the Spaulding jacket to my untrained eyes. Also note the mix of uniform within the same company!

                Will,

I find it interesting that his buckle is upside down. Great image though!

I've previously posted that same photo on the forum here : http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...832#post168832 This picture hangs in my courthouse because one of the judges is a descendant of Andrews. Per the regimental history, he's Andrews, not Andrus. See, https://archive.org/stream/historyof...ge/98/mode/1up By coincidence, we actually have a different judge in the same courthouse whose last name is Andrus.

I know this is an old thread. It seems some of the pictures have fallen off. Can anyone post pictures of the Spaulding Jacket? Thanks!

                            Hi Tim,
I am probably about 20 minutes away from the Geneva History Center. I can see about exterior images of the jacket if you'd like.
