Re: Spaulding jacket/Illinois Infantry Jackets
Ok Pards, I was finally able to get to the museum and gain access to the jacket. Since I do not know how to post pictures, I will need some assistance from the War Dept when she gets home. I first noticed that the buttons are reproduction "Waterbury." However, in my opinion, the jacket itself appears to be the real thing. It is definitely old, as shown by moth holes in the sleeves and other places on the uniform, in addition to wear to the top of the collar. There are no buttons or chevrons on the sleeves, no epaulets, no belt loop, and no outside pocket. It is a six piece construction of dark blue wool. The inside lining is white (unbleached) cotton muslin, with apparent dark sweat stains. The sleeves are lined with a silky-like white material that may be synthetic (possibly added much later?). There is a marking in the left sleeve, however, it is too faded to make out. There is a pocket on the left side, similar to a sack coat. Since I am no expert, I leave it to you guys to determine whether this coat is the real thing, or not. I hope the pictures help.
In an aside, I was able to recover all of my loaned items from the museum, making for a most rewarding afternoon. Thanks for your patience!
