I'd agree with Pat Craddock -- the story here is probably that the lighter appearance has to do with the wetplate collodion process. If this were a slightly brighter shade of blue rather than a deep indigo, it could indeed photograph as quite a lot paler than it was in real life.
Case in point: click on the "image gallery" above and my unit's folder, the Atlantic Guard Soldiers Aid Society and compare the two pictures of us at Remembrance Day -- the same pose taken (1) by Rob Gibson with a period camera and (2) with a modern camera for comparison purposes.
The dress I'm wearing is a fairly dark medium blue, but in the wetplate collodion photography process, it photographs a sort of cream-white
