    What new publications are out there now

    I've been out of the hobby for some time, with the exception of doing a small LH in Bardstown once a few years back with the Tar Water boys. When I left Paul Johnson's book was realitively new on the scene. I got that one. Any other nice uniform/equipage books, articles or such I should track down to bring myself up to date?

    I'm getting ready to list a number of uniform and eqiuppage reference books that I've collected over the years, on the "For Sale" Forum. Most are going to be more well-known to AC members and you may have some of these already (like the Johnson book). But feel free to send me a PM with any particular wants. I might have it.

          Clark,

          Glad to see you are back home safe and sound. It has been a long time. Two new(ish) books of interest:

          Mike O'Donell finally published "US Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910" last August, and it is worth owning even if you have the previous two.

          Craig Barry's 2006 "The Civil War Musket: A Handbook for Historical Accuracy -- Lock, Stock, and Barrel" is a good purchase for the price as it is a darn good mix of data, fact, photographs, history, opinion, and vendor information.

          Used CRRC2s show up now and then, and most often on Ebay. Rumor has it somebody living in a bunker in Maryland has a stash of them, but I don't think that rumor is all that true.

            Clark, sure thing. I have to get the list together. One of those I have is O'Donnell's 1st canteen book, which he did with Stephen Sylvia and it's signed by both authors. I actually have a couple by them, as I recall. Charles is right, his books keep getting better and better, especially as new specimens are discovered. Sorry about the CRRC.... it's gone and I could kick myself.

              Clark,

              To add to this conversation, I have found Googlebooks to be an excellent resource, and can get lost for hours poking around with their search engine for old books. This tool gets better and better with time. Some of the immediate post-war material can often make for fine CW reading, too.

              Google Books

              Some of the non-reprint regimentals that sell for astronomical prices can be read online, too. The .pdf files read well, although the OCR can have a few glitches here and there. The plain text version allows for copy/paste work, which is very nice.
