  • "Vicksburg 1863"

    Greetings,

I am interested in hearing from anyone who may have read Winston Groom's recent book "Vicksburg 1863". Though not as detailed as the more equipment and culture heavy items many of us normally read, Groom's books are generally entertaining reads and enjoyable. I read his "Shrouds of Glory" several years ago. I picked up a copy of this new book this past weekend, and was curious to know if anyone else had.

I'm reading that book right now. I appreciate the great amount of "before the battle" background Groom provides. He covers New Orleans, Baton Rouge, the 8 failed attempts to take Vicksburg, and so on. I'm on page 319 of 460, and we're only just now attacking Jackson, MS. So the battle itself doesn't occupy the entire book.

He does provide some odd footnotes... such as the procedure for making "Sherman neckties." I think they seem odd to me because I already know about them... for a general reader new to the Civil War, they're probably helpful.

It's an enjoyable book and I'm learning something new.
