How common were they in a field/battle setting. Time period of concern is mid-to-late 1864; Army of the Potomac or Army of the James. Anyone know of any images taken in the field that represent this?

If my memory serves me right there is an 1864 Brandy Station Albumen print of the 114th PA PVI. The OD can be seen wearing his sash. Recently, I have been doing research on garrison photographs from entire length of the war. Most of those images depict mostly officers without sashes except for the OD. I will try and dig up some images...
