    Hey all,

    I'm just wondering if "mercanized" thread is period correct. I bought some at Needle and Thread that was 100% cotton and mercanized. can I use this?

        Hallo!

        Short answer... no.

        The process for mercerizing cotton (treating cotton fibers with sodium hydroxide to make them stronger and easier to dye) was invented in 1844 by Englishman John Mercer.

        However, the process did not catch on until the early 1890's when H. A. Lowe revised and modernized it for commercial applications.
        IIRC, the issue was that Mercer's original process shrunk the fabric too much. Lowe countered that effect, and his changes gave the cotton a sheen or satiny finish.

          Fine Sir,

          thanks for the input. I browsed through the posted article and kinda gathered that. But I know Wiki Pedia can be iffy sometime so thanks for backin the state ments up!
