  • Cartridge Box Slings

I just got a nice handmade leather cartridge box sling with the rough leather side and the slightly rough black side. Now, I read an article in The Watchdog about how the slings would have one of the sides waxed but it seemed as if he was saying the black side was waxed and the rough leather side was worn facing out. The black side is always worn facing out but it wasn't very clear on what he was saying. It's not really supposed to be a Federal sling because of it's rough/not-shiny finish, but here's the photos:

    Mike,

OK...I'm unsure what the product you received is, as from your description it sounds like yours may actually be what's called a 'split' and I don't know of any documented usage of splits during our period.

As to your question: Waxed Flesh, is the description of leather which has the Grain Side ('smooth side') and the Flesh Side ('rough side') present at which the Flesh Side has also been impregnated with Beeswax/tallow as to present a more uniform/smooth finished appearance. There should be a NOTICEABLE difference between the 'Waxed Flesh' and the Grain Side.

Pictures would help with clarification: paulboulden@hotmail.com

It's most likely a split, but do you mean it wasn't documented for Federal use? Because I would think splits would be more likely issued to Confederate troops, which is what I portray. I put up some pictures of it though.

When slung, the black side is facing out. The natural leather is inside, regardless of US or CS. Which issue of The Watchdog? I will pull it out of box of them and try to decipher what the author was trying to say.

I'll have to check, I knew it was the black side out but it was just the way it was worded that confused me a tad.
