  • 47th. VA Infantry equipment, winter 63

    Hi All,

I look for information on the plausible equipment of the 47th. Virginia in winter, 1863.
I imagine well the standard, RDII jacket, RD trouser, etc. But maybe has other possibilities, the other information there.
Any help will be welcome. ;)
    Thanks!

You may want to try Musselman's book on the 47th VA.

        Mr. Miconnet,

The history on the 47th VA has very little on uniforms. The only detail there is in the book is in the A&IG reports from fall of 1864.

I have done extensive research on this unit and have turned up very little in the way of uniforms.

            Mr. Miconnet,

While I hate to assume and use generalaztions, I would say that one could go with the "typical" issue look for the ANV.

One might note however, that many of the companies from this unit were raised in the Fredericksburg/Stafford, VA area. So, for most of the war, where they grew up was occupied by the Federal army. So one could argue, that they were receiving less from home than most, but once again that is an assumption. The history of the unit actually talks about why the "desertion" rate for the regiment was so high. The author's conclusion was that men would go home and get aressted by the Federal army. So it was either take the oath or become a POW.

One man actaully to took the oath and joined the Federal army. He was transferred out west to fight Indians. He died drinking from a poisoned well in 1864.

            Cheers,
