United States Military Small Arms 1816-1865, by Robert M. Reilly, Chapter III, pages 92 & 93, U. S. Rifle Musket M-1863 Type II ( Model of 1864), 5 th paragraph;
quote,
"Ramrods will be found to vary on the Model 1863 type II rifle-musket with many being fitted with the "tulip-head" type of the preceding model, and others carry the knurled, slotted type as originally specified for this model."
In all fairness, I originally stated these are "the same as the Enfield". This is of course misleading. I apologize to anyone that may have misunderstood my intent of that statement. Which was only to imply the parentage of the design was only a little more than obvious.
Anyone looking at and being able to view both original Enfield and the "specified" ramrod for the Model 1863 Type II (as discribed by Reilly), would be very hard press not to see this Springfield ramrod evolved directly from the Enfield's knurled, slotted type ramrod.
