  • Period correct thread?

I have a Civil War era leather wallet that I am selling on [an auction site] right now, but before I let go of it I intend on making a copy of said wallet. I have measured and drawn and studied and measured the thickness of the leather and the number of stitches here and there and now need a fine, period correct thread to sew the thing together with. It is evident that this wallet was sewn together by machine. It was made by Cobb & Johnson of Lancaster, Mass. I have some waxed thread, but it is too thick and prefer something on a spool in case I try to sew, rather than hand stitch, it together.

Anyone know of a good, strong, fine thread?

      Joe,
If I may, after reviewing the phots of the item on [auction site], I am certain that the wallet was not stitched by any machine, rather a skilled craftsman. There are no telltale marks on the leather from such a process.
If you are intent on reproducing your item, my suggestion would be to purchase some 18/3 fine linen thread. You will not find it prewaxed and will have to do so yourself. It is available from Abbey Saddlery in the UK.
