  • Any patterns for the British Military Knapsack?

I want to make a Issac and Campbell knapsack. I cannot find a pattern for it any where. I even tried to find 1850's British quartermaster books on the internet. Nothing!!
Is there anyone out there who can give me a hand in finding this information.
    Thank you,
    Ken Myers

Ken, short of drafting your own off of an original, no. the I&C is not for the faint of heart. It takes my father 40+ hours to do one.

As Eric mentioned your best bet in trying to repro one of these is to look at an original, lots of little details on these packs to get them right. Both Gettysburg and the MOC have one of these packs in their collection. Maybe someone else can chime in if there are any in the collections of the Relic Room or the Atlanta History Center.

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum has one in their collection in excellent condition.

If you contact the MOC they can sell you a object worksheet that will at least give you a start on a pattern.

            Kent,

I think you have confused me with Eric Stephenson.
I cannot help you with the Issac Campbell knapsack, but I can scan some sized drawings of a Crimean knapsack and forward them. My understanding is that surpus old pattern knapsacks were sold to Confederate agents in England and shipped over.
The pattern is much easier, being without the wooden stabaliser bar at the top and straps like the mexican war knapsack. Let me know and I will scan them tonight.

I assume the question that was not asked was how to buy an object worksheet. I have attached the site.

                  Ken,

                  Shall I scan or not?
Crimean Memories, a new book has excellent views of that period knapsack pages 138 to 141.
Equipment for the Army 1866, Engineers, by Capt. Petrie has scale drawings of the 1856knapsack only available as original volume. Perhaps you might try the Army Museum in London.
Tangled Web published by Service Publications may still be available. I gave my copy to Tim Sheads in Gettysburg.
Please let me know if you want my scans.

Yes please scan the Crimean pack pattern. I have been busy doing a thousand other things since I wrote you. Please forgive me for being tardy.

Is Crimean Memories the title of the book? Was there an authors name?

                        Mark,

Have you not seen this marvelous compilation? I saw the advertisement when in Gettysburg last summer and placed my order. I received in October and it is really marvelous.
The sad part is that it is not technical enough. Measurements!

Finally here are the scans. I had a little trouble, new scanner, and send you both sets that I made.
The knapsack is not the 1854 pattern that Campbell would most likely have made but that worn prior to 1854 when the new pattern came out. As stated previously there is evidence that surplus knapsacks were sold and shipped to the CSA.
