    Re: Photos of Original Federal Overcoat Linings

    Paul

    I found this and thought it might be of interest. These images come from the Brady Archive

    In this image simply entitled Camp Scene, we have a group of officers. In the background there is what appears to be a modified greatcoat. It is hard to tell, a more trained eye may rule this out as an issue greatcoat. I think it is a greatcoat primarily because of the collar construction but I could be mistaken.

    Regardless I thought the lining is great and worthy of discussion here.

        Here's some pics of a J. T. Martin contract overcoat with striped lining. Also note the overcoat was stencilled with the soldier's name on the outside back of the coat (much like WW2 Marine dungaree shirts) but underneath the cape.

          As a side note, it appears that the gent seated in the chair, wearing the light trowsers without piping, has stirrup starps attached to the bottom of his trowsers and fitted around the heels of his boots. Notice how straight his pants legs remain while seated...

            The lining of the coat in the photo seems similar to th J.T.Martin coat picturesd above. It appears that somebody has added a pocket, at least the white pocket bag seems to be visible.

              other side notes;
              that is an interesting way to put up a Sibley tent.....with a large tripod! i wonder if this made it more stable during storms or made more room in the inn without the center pole. a stove is in here also but doesn't vent out the top.

              On the far left there appears to be a wall or screen made of planks with no roof... Could this be a sink or latrine located in close proximity to the tents? Bet it smelled good!

              I don't think any of these fellows are wearing an issue undershirt.
