  • Schuylkill Arsenal Jacket

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone could give me a description for the correct color wool used for the Schuylkill Arsenal Jacket.

    Thank you,

I know blue, but I wanted to know if anyone knew of a more descriptive blue, like what the specific name for it may have been.

          Re: Schuylkill Arsenal Jacket

          Hallo!

IMHO, you are asking for something that does not exist.

When fabric for uniforms was procured from different suppliers, at different times, and in different batches and quantities, there were invariably different shades and hues of "dark blue" from the different makers and particularly indigo dyers (with logwood blue also).

That was further complicated by how the requisitions were filled from either the shelf inventory of one depot or pieced together from the inventory of a number of depots.

The army chose to ignore it as not an issue and the compatabiity of different shades was not important.

Schyulkill Arsenal, was not very strict either, and during period of fabric shortages was sometimes more concerned about making uniforms than in the details of the fabric. For example, at times they were known for "outrageous" lining materials, or during one shortage of using striped upholstery fabric to cover canteens.

Okay thank you, does anybody know where I could purchase the fabric used to make one of these jackets.

What kind of SA jacket? Mounted service? Infantry? Invalid Corps? Zouave? Signal Corps? They made them all. The fabric could be different on each. Can you narrow it down?
