That's a neat pouch. Pretty cool that the ears are sewn directly to the outer flap like the late war Federal pouches. Might have to make me one of these!

too bad there isn't a history or provenance to go along with it.

      Bill,
I am not skilled with leather, but it appears the nail marks were not even "punched" over (I'm don't know the term for it), just left as is. I count 5 of them.

Missouri boot and shoe sells a copy of this pouch. On his site he states it has trans-Mississippi origins. They may have more info on it.

I used to make that pouch, although it did not sell well for some reason. Robert Serio of Mo. Boot and Shoe provided me with the stats on it years ago when we working in the Museum Biz together. The orginal he examined was in either OK or Arkansas and he believed in had a Trans-Miss prvonance. Can't remember the details though.

There's plenty of pieces out there that have tack holes that were never covered. And tack holes are all over the place when it comes to location on the piece. I believe it was really up to the person that was assembling it. How ever they needed to hold it the form to sew it together. The tack hole stamps are seen in a ton of shapes, sizes and styles. The neatest one I've seen was a leaf stamp on a pre-war cap pouch. I believe that one will be featured in Gaede's cap pouch book so I don't want to spoil it here by posting a pic. I think it's really neat that there are tack holes in each side of the pocket. You don't see that too often.

                  Hey Bryant,

The Wisconsin Veteran's Museum has a similar cap pouch. Certainly eye catching.

hhhmmm, possibly 3 cap pouches of this style.
Steve, is there any history attached to the one in Wisconsin?

                        Re: unique CS cap pouch

Here is the response from Bob Serio regarding this type of pouch. Evidently, this is the fifth example to pop-up. With five examples, this makes a very well represented variation among original CS cap boxes.

"Mark, That it is, or rather another example. Here is the story, which might make a good MCH Journal article.

The first one I saw was at the museum in Ft. Smith, where it still resides. Another surfaced in recent times, a souvenir of an Illinois soldier who was in Shreveport at the close of the war. Another is in the Sweeney Museum (Wilson Creek) and is on the belt of Missouri Colonel Slayback (Trans-Mississippi service). A fourth one surfaced at Shiloh Relics last spring or summer and I put George Susat on to it and he bought it for his collection. This makes a fifth one.

Of course the two latter have no known documentation. I feel like with the three that have provenance that these were at best Trans-Miss. produced in the NE Texas shops or sent in from across the river. I lean toward produced in the Trans-Miss simply because they had the leather and the facilities to do it. There is some minor variation in the examples, a result of the pre-industrial organization of a period harness shop where the boss cuts the parts and passes them out to the workmen to assemble. I just completed making two of these. They are a bit small."
