  • S.C. Relic Room Cartridge Box

Bryant Roberts and I visited the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room several months back and came across this cartridge box that had a characteristic that I had not seen before.

The box was captured near Aiken, S.C. in 1865.

On the left side of the box there is the remnant of a leather strap or tab that was sewn onto the box itself. The upper end of the thin piece of leather had been cut or torn off leaving only the 1” X ˝” tab you can see stitched onto the side of the box in the second image.

On further inspection of the opposite side of the box, it is clear that there is stitching which looks just like that which attaches the piece on the left. However, the entire piece of leather is gone on the right and all that remains is the remnant stitches.

We pondered what this could have been but could not come up with anything solid. I hope that someone here will have a better idea of what this could be. It looks like it could have been a strap that ran from one side of the box to the other however this “strap” would have been a narrow piece of leather as it appears to be only ˝ “ wide.

Sorry the images are so poor. They were taken with my cell phone without a flash.
    Thanks

Looks to be an improvised cartridge box belt to take weight off his waist.

Or possibly converted into a dispatch case or something along that line.

        Eric,

I am glad you posted. I remember us talking about this last year at Antietam. At that time I did not realize that this attachment was found on both sides of the box.
How would that belt have worked? Do you mean a shoulder strap?

Next time I am up there I will ask one of the staff about the box. This forum has a very good relationship with the SCCRR. It could be a improvised Sam Brown style of belt. Maybe as the trooper lost weight on the campaign or the constant marching demanded more support.

It would have connected one side of the box, over the shoulder, then back to the other side. I have seem a number of boxes that have been adapted for cartridge box belt that were originally intended to be waist belt only. I recently put 40 lead balls in my box to see what the weight would have been and it now makes sense.

Cartridge box belts went over the shoulder, waist belts went around the waist.

The box I thought we were talking about over the summer was one associated with the 3rd SC which had a button hole to attach the frock coat tail to.
