    Re: Eye Glasses

Townsend carries the sliding temple variety, which is what i purchased, and there is a loop at the end of the temple arm to run a string or ribbon through so you dont step on them when they fall off your face, i recieved mine in 3 days and will go to get lenses this weekend

      Re: Eye Glasses

Most of my antique reading glasses are pretty secure with just the spring arms over (not around) the ears, and will put up with a fair amount of running around.

Of course, I usually wear them just for writing and not for fighting. On the other hand, while portraying a federal clerk at Fort Stevens last year, I discovered in the middle of a little fire fight that I had neglected to remove my blue spectacles. You can imagine my embarassment, but it was a little less than my concern that I would lose such a nice antique at a mere reenactment. :)

I have the straight arm variety and have found that by bending the arms a little that they will stay on remarkably well. I have worn mine while on a full sprint through the palmettos without any issue. I definitely recommend getting period glasses. After fourteen years of reenacting, it has been great actually being able to see the Confederates that I have been shooting at.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with everyone else with this one. I found mine, a pair from 1850 or so, at an antique store for 2 or 3 dollars and they were in pristine condition.

Can I get an opinion on these?

You may have already but check out this link:
Civil War Era Eyeglasses By John A. Braden
There are a lot of sutlers that carry reproduction period eyeglasses...some are correct, some are part correct, some are nowheres close. You can use the above article to judge for yourself.
Someone sent me this link at one time and the glasses look pretty good but I would contact them about the material them about the material they are made from:
                  Focusers Eyeglasses
Look at your common general sutlers and see what they carry. Compare it to the research article I posted above before you buy. There are too many choices out there of reproductions to settle for say the right temples but the wrong nose piece. Good luck in your search.
