I have read a great deal about the late war English jackets coming into the Confederacy. How about the early war uniforms? Were they made from the same patterns as the late war uniforms? Was the cloth the same?
In the Savannah Quartermaster reports of late 1862 and early 1863, they said that the men in the river batteries had been issued english wool jackets with matalic buttons. These men were also issued English Tweed trousers. They were also being issued english military shoes. In the same report, they wrote that the quartermaster had French Military shoes. The ship, the Fingal, also brought in black english great coats.
Would the cloth be the Blue-grey english cloth? How about the tweed? What would that look like? And the French military shoe, what did they look like?
So many questions, not enough answers.

Ken Myers
