  • Richard Kirkland's CS Enfield at the South Carolina Relic Room

I would like to ask any of you who have a connection to the South Carolina Relic room if you happen to know (or can get) the Confederate inventory number on the butt plate of Richard Kirkland's (aka "The Angel of Mayre's Heights") Enfield that is on display there. I recently acquired a Northern Virginia battlefield pickup CS #'d "bar on band" rifle and am trying to corroborate some very interesting verbal history associated with the gun. I need the number off of Kirkland's gun as a starting point for the research.

    Thank you all very much.

    Hi Tim,

Kirkland's P58 "Naval #2" rifle carries number 2370. It also has a JS-anchor, in front of the buttplate tang. An odd location, but I have seen another Enfield of the same model with a JS-anchor in the same location (also on a handful of P53s).

Hope you can post anything interesting that comes from this research!

    Regards,

      Geoff-

Thank you very much for the confirmation of the number. I too have seen (and owned one) JS Anchor marked guns with the mark in front of the butt plate. The one I owned was likely one of the last so marked, as it did not have an inventory number.

Thanks again - I'll share what I can, when I can.

        Tim,

I checked my notes - I have a record of six P53s with the JS-anchor appearing in front of the buttplate tang. Only one of these has an inventory number - #4212 (an 1862-dated Birmingham gun).

The other P58 "Naval #2" I have seen with the JS-anchor in this location was #4017 - an 1861-dated gun by W.L. Sargant.
