  • "Georgia Jackets"

I have been looking for photos of soldiers wearing the so called Georgia Jacket that has black epulattes, collar and cuff trim. I searched through my old MI magazines and have only found one. I am told that one of the Rose Farm photos includes a soldier wearing one, but I've not seen it yet. There is a sketch of a soldier wearing one in Cadet Gray and Butternut Brown, but other than these, I cannot seem to come up with many pictures of soldiers wearing them. I also have not been able to locate any specific information about them-- from what I can tell it seems there was some variation as to the amount of trim, exterior pockets etc.

    Any information would be appreciated.

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

      Hello Adam,

This book called Uniforms of the Civil War has a photograph of one Georgia Jacket on page 190 with cuff and collar trim, but no epulattes . Here is a link for Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=bGA...age&q=&f=false

Also, when we did the Turner's Gap event last year, a book on Georgia soldiers was shown and I am asking my friend what the title of that book is and who it was written by. It had tons of photographs of uniforms. When he emails me back, I will post that information for you. There were a few Georgia Jackets in it. Hope this helps.

        Adam,

My friend emailed me the book informaiton. It's entitled "Remembering Georgia's Confederates" by By David N. Wiggins. It is one of those small town books that you see when you visit a town's visitor center. You can view it online through Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=htv...age&q=&f=false

Check it out and I hope this helps.

I can't find an image on the web at the moment but there is an image of Theophilus S Luckie of the 6th Florida in a so called "georgia" jacket. last time I looked at my research there was evidence that an officer in the 6th Florida had gone to savannah to procure clothing before the 6th left for East tennessee.

Here's a link to the publication showing the picture of Theophilus Luckie. He's on page 8 and the author comments on the out-of-state procurement of uniforms in the caption.

One thing to keep in mind is that the 59th Georgia was a new addition to Tige Anderson's brigade. The 59th replaced one of "1st Georgia's" that had been recalled back to georgia and the 59th was sent ot the ANV to replace them. The 59th was on the extreme right of Andersons brigade and actually split off from the 9th, 8th and 11th Georgia during the afternoon assault in the Rose Woods.
Speculative at best, I know, but the unfortunate soldier in the image may well be from the 59th Georgia.

Just as an FYI, the design you reference did not seem limited to shell jackets. There's a pic of Thomas G Wood, Company H 11th GA (ANV) wearing a single breasted frock coat with the black tri point design on the cuffs and black collar. The pic appeared in the 2005 Confederate Calendar. This is an "early war" pic because Wood died of pneumonia in December of 1861......Jerry Stiles
