I'm trying to replicate the uniform of Pvt.Thomas Taylor 8th Louisiana Co.K. Dose anybody have any idea what kind of cap pouch he is wearing in the photo?. It looks like it's a Federal pouch but I can't be sure.

Re: Cap pouch question?
The cap pouch looks like it is Federal, but some Confederate cap boxes look that way to. The equipment all around is interesting, for the cartridge box looks like a US M1808 cartridge box (maybe a British import, but I doubt it), and the knapsack might be a imported French model.Andrew Kasmar

Re: Cap pouch question?
The musket is actually a M1816 converted by the Remington Company. The musket was rifled, sights added, Maynard tape prime system, new lock plate, and a hand-full of other small changes. I have attached some photos of the one I own for comparison (photos are from the College Hill Arsenal website). Thanks
All the best,

Re: Cap pouch question?
I believe his musket is a 1816/22 converted to Maynard priming. Check out the bottom of the bottom (rammer side) of the bottom barrel band. Cartridge box could be English or a militia pattern, but doesn't look quite like an 1808 to my eye.Pat Brown

Re: Cap pouch question?
I would say with certainly that it is not a British cartridge box. If you notice in the photo, the side of the box does not show the side covers that English cartridge boxes have http://www.ldhaning.com/thaxton.html . Some militia box and M1808 cartridge box do not have side covers, like what is seen in the photo.Andrew Kasmar

Re: Cap pouch question?
This was kicked around backn the 1980's when Charlie first started producing the Taylor jacket. The prevailing theory back then was that it could be a French cartridge box.Paul Manzo

Re: Cap pouch question?
So could it be an earlier French design or even an earlier British design pre interior ears (someone around here knows the progression of English gear)? 1808 boxes didn't have the interior flap in the early years, but were shaped differently. Look also at the amazing number of militia boxes that fit little or none of our labelled patterns.
Andrew, nice pictures on the Remington 1816/22 conversion.Pat Brown

Re: Cap pouch question?
Thanks for the replies. I called a couple of museums an they are pretty sure the cap pouch is early war U.S. The cartridge box is Enfield. They have no idea what kind of knapsack Taylor is wearing, and there's a lot of confusion about the musket. I only spoke with two people,so I wont consider this information as written in stone. but it's a start. THANKS!!
