  • History behind the Single Bag Knapsack

Does anyone know the history behind the single bag knapsack. Like the type Jarnagin sales. Has anyone seen this type of knapsack documented to a unit? I am not sure if this would be correct for a Confederate impression. Thanks for your help.

Heritage Auctions had one of these knapsacks for auction a while ago. Although there's no history with the bag to say that it was CS issue, it the same bag style that Jarnagin offer (but w/o historically correct painted canvas).

Colonel Todd, in his work American Military Equipage, published by the Company of Military Historians, states that this knapsack is one of the most common confederate issues. We came by a near mint original knapsack of this type and have used it to copy our reproduction.
You could write to Dave Jarnigan and ask him. Or even visit his store if you're down that way.
