  • Original Vs Reproduction Sized Scabbards

Is there a difference in the size of original 1816 and M1842 bayonets? A well known maker of leather goods had Federal Issue 1851-1859 bayonet scabbards for sale. The buyer is offered the option of a scabbard which will fit original 1816 - 42 bayonets or reproduction 1816 - 42 bayonets. What is the difference between the two?

    Thank you.

Why not ask the maker of said scabbard.

Re: Original Vs Reproduction Sized Scabbards

      Hallo!

      M1816:

      Blade length: 16"
      Socket length: 3"
      Blade width: 1"
      Shank length: 1 1/4" +/-
      Socket front OD, 1 1/16"
      Socket front ID: 27/32"
      Barrel stud: Top

However there are variants with slightly varying dimensions as well as shape of the stud slot.
There are also the M1816 for the Maynard Remington conversions with the main variation being an 18" blade.

      M1842:

      Blade length: 18"
      Socket length: 2 5/8"
      Blade width: 1"
      Shank length: 1 1/2"
      Socket front OD, 31/32"
      Socket front ID: 27/32"
      Barrel stud: Bottom

Indian and Pakistani Reproduction bayonets will/may vary by bayonet, as they are "hand made" according to the skills and discipline of the workers.

A friend and I both had scabbards custom made by a well known maker for our Model 1816 bayonets. Mine is original, his a repro. Among other things the lenght is different between the two.
