What does 1st A.C. Mean?

I found this posted on Ebay, but couldn't figure out what the last line meant. Its a Smoothside canteen marked "J. Dougherty, Co. K 5th regt, 1st A. C." the seller is saying it is a union artillerist's canteen. Anyone have any idea what "1st A. C. " stands for? The only J. Dougherty I could find who was in a company K was in the 5th US infantry.

What of the possibility that the canteen's original owner's service was misidentified? Just perusing the CWSSS for this name, 5th Regiment, I found that the 5th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry Regiment was assigned several times to the First Corps during the first two years of the war. A John Dougherty is listed in Company D. There is also a John J. Dougherty listed with Company K, 5th U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry.
